Bringing the Kentucky Derby to the Designer Mix-Off
This year, I was honored to participate in the 4th annual Designer Mix-Off hosted by California Home + Design at Studio Becker! I was challenged to show my creative skill in the form of a cocktail in competition with designers Paul Vincent Wiseman, Kendall Wilkinson, Geoffrey De Sousa and Emilie Munroe. My mocktail, ‘Mint to Be,’ celebrated my seventeen-year-old daughter's passion for horse riding along with the equestrians at this year’s Kentucky Derby. With its mix of cucumber, citrus, and basil, the beverage is the perfect refresher for summer days. Try it for yourself using the recipe below and add a splash of Gin if you’re feeling spirited.
Mocktail:
1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
1 oz blood orange juice
2 oz sparkling water
1/2 oz basil simple syrup
1/3 cucumber, cut into matchsticks
lime slices, for garnish
basil leaves, for garnish
*For cocktail add 1.5 ounces of Gin
For the basil lime simple syrup:
1 cup packed fresh basil sprigs
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
3 strips of lime zest
